Mohsin Naqvi has imposed a ban on the sale of petrol motorcycles in Islamabad

To everyone’s amazement, Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi recently has placed his ban on the acquisition of gasoline motorcycles in Islamabad. This decision was arrived at a meeting that was taking place at Capital Development Authority (CDA) where current city development projects were being discussed. From media translated documents available, the purpose of this decision is to develop the city of Islamabad to be among the best cities in the world. As a measure of tackling environmental problems, the government is focusing on electric cars hence the citizenry will only be allowed to buy electric motor cycles. Further, environmentally friendly electrical public transport such as electric buses will be implemented.

In a press release received from the Federal Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the PTV managing director and CEO, Mohsin Naqvi, announced that CDA was directed to only buy electric bikes in future following the Ministry’s directive in alleviating pollution. The statement underlined that the Interior Minister has practically prohibited the acquisition of petrol-lying motorcycles.

This decision has elicited some\Requests for checke, more so since electric motorcycles from Yadea, Metro, and EVEE, as helpful as they are in the long run, have continued to be expensive for an average citizen to afford new. Moreover, the Pakistan electric bikes market is relatively small and has less variety in electric bikes especially for the used bike buyers.

On the other hand, bikes that run on petrol like Honda CD 70 and United bikes have a lot of varieties and moreover, their spare parts are cheaper and in a long run they can be sold at good prices. On the other hand, mechanisms related to electric bikes in Pakistan are not well developed, dearth of spare parts and the value of electric bikes is significantly lower as compared to that of new electric bikes. Hence, the intended move has met a rude shock coming from the government.
