Automobiles That Are Not Fit for Driving During the Monsoon

Worries about urban floods in Pakistan, mainly Lahore, are intensifying with the approach of the monsoon season as pre-monsoon conditions have already set in. Some areas are more prone to flooding when there is heavy rainfall which include DHA Phases 1 and 5, DHA Main Boulevard, PIA Main Boulevard, Gulberg 2 Main Area, CBD Kalma Underpass, Walton Road, Wapda Town etc.

Driving in flooded urban areas has serious hazards particularly for vehicles that can easily be damaged by water due to their design. These cars include:

Risk of Honda Civic (Specially Reborn)
During heavy rains, water can damage the engine of Honda Civics especially the Reborn models due to their low positioned air intake that is located on the front bumper which implies that even about 2 inches of standing water in the road can be sucked and this may lead to some problems in the functioning of the engine. Therefore, it is suggested that during monsoon season, motorist who possess civic cars should abstain from driving in deep waters.

Issue with BMW
BMW 3 Series cars have got their air intakes located low near the front bumper where they are closed to its fog lamps. In case there is like three to four inches of water found on roads, then any such entry will result into severe damage within an engine which has been infiltrated by water. To reduce this risk, some owners modify their air intake systems to prevent water ingress.

Carburetor Engines
Older autos like Mehran, Cultus and Cuore have carburetor engines whose troubles include difficulties in starting up when it’s raining; this is because if there’s any amount of rain around it might get inside through an air-fuel mixture area thereby affecting combustion and preventing ignition for some time until excess moisture evaporates after a few hours.

Old hybrid car risks                                                                                                                                                               The older hybrid vehicles like the Prius may get seal leaks over time especially in their hybrid systems and battery managers. The water getting through these leaks can result in electrical failure which may be expensive to repair. Hence, it is important for owners of such vehicles to have them regularly inspected by competent mechanics to avoid any of these problems.

Factors for consideration on EV cars                                                                                                               Most modern electric vehicles (EVs) have good waterproof rations (IP65/IP67), thus preventing them from total damage when exposed to certain amount of water. Nevertheless, you should not drive them during heavy downpours or in any locality affected by floods because there are some inherent risks associated with doing so Water reaching sensitive electronic parts could mean serious damages or even total collapse calling for costly replacements. The manufacturers usually provide guidelines on how drivers can remain safe during such times.

The impacts of low air inlets                                                                                                                                   Any car with low positioned front bumper or under the car air intakes is prone to destruction in flooded areas. Water that enters such intakes can result in engine issues or even failure and thus the need for a specialist’s assistance. Drivers must be aware of their car designs and avoid driving through deep water if possible to prevent these expensive problems.

Vehicle owners can safeguard their vehicles during the monsoon season by understanding these specific weaknesses, ensuring safety as well as cost-effectiveness in maintenance.
